Americans Getting Faster

Looks like the Americans are catching up with the rest of the world in middle distance and long distance events. American Chris Solinsky of Stanford University made his debut for the 10,000m by breaking 27 minutes with a time of 26:59.60. That is the US record and also makes him the first non-African runner to break 27 minutes. Runners like Chris and marathoner Ryan Hall give me a lot of hope about the running scene in the U.S.

Not only are we getting faster, but more and more Americans are participating in races ranging from 5K to the marathon. I got a chance to see this first hand in Chicago last year. It was my first marathon in over a decade, and the race was much huger than I remembered it being back in the 1990s. In the 1990s, you could walk into the sports expo the day before the race and register without a problem. This year, registration opened at the end of January and was closed by March.
